9 Safe Sun Tanning Tips

Many women, and even some men, will do just about anything to get that perfect tan. But, with so much current research into skin cancer and other problems associated with overexposure to the sun, many are wondering how to still get that great tan, while avoiding the potential side effects of sunbathing.

Safe Tanning Tip 1
Even though you are looking to get a tan, you should still wear sun block. With a sun block with a low SPF, your body can still catch some of the sun’s rays, but you are less likely to get burned. Remember, a tan is essentially your body’s way of protecting itself from the harmful effects of the sun. The more you can slow down this process, the less your skin will receive long-term damage from sunbathing.

Safe Tanning Tip 2
Similarly, you should gradually build up the time you spend in the sun. Many people are tempted to intentionally burn themselves right away, believing this provides a good “base” for the tan. Sunburns are a sign of skin damage and can lead to serious skin complications. Instead, the tan should be slowly built up to lessen the potential damage.

Safe Tanning Tip 3
You should apply your sun block to your body before you head out to the sun. Applying sun block first helps ensure that you get cover your entire body, guaranteeing that all of your skin is protected. And don’t forget to apply sun block to your lips! Lips can become easily burned or dried out, which is both unhealthy for your skin and unattractive.

Safe Tanning Tip 4
The sun is at its hottest between noon and 3:00. Avoid sunbathing at this time. The added intensity of the sun does not improve the look of your tan. Instead, it increases you likelihood of becoming burned and, consequently, experiencing skin damage. During this time of the day, it is best to stay in a shaded area and to wear protective clothing.

Safe Tanning Tip 5
Spending time in the water increases your chances of getting sunburned. The sun’s rays reflect from the water and are basically magnified onto your body. Getting a sunburn while in the water can happen with little to know warning signs. Where a sun block, even if it is a low SPF, every time you are in water. Make sure the sun block is water resistant, as well, and reapply it as often as the product recommends. This is normally at least every 2-3 hours.

Safe Tanning Tip 6
Hats and shirts do provide an extra layer of protection to your skin. Be sure to wear these when not sunbathing in order to protect your skin from excessive amounts of sun. This is particularly important if you will be spending a great deal of time outdoors, such as playing sports or gardening.

Safe Tanning Tip 7
If you do play a lot of sports or if you work outdoors and sweat a great deal, be sure to wear a sun block that is specially formulated for such activities. Waterproof sun blocks are ideal for those who are active during the day outdoors.

Safe Tanning Tip 8
People with fair skin need to be especially cautious when exposing their skin to the sun for long periods of time. The same is true for people who burn easily or who have a history of tanning poorly. People with freckles or a great number of moles should also take extra precautions when spending time in the sun. People who fit under any of these categories are at a greater risk of developing skin cancer. Similarly, children under the age of 16 and individuals with a family history of skin cancer should avoid exposing their skin to excessive amounts of sun.

Safe Tanning Tip 9
If you have sensitive skin, make sure to purchase a sun block that will not irritate your skin. There are hypoallergenic sun block’s available. If you are not sure where to look or what you need for your skin, ask the pharmacist and she will be glad to help.

A deep, brown tan can be very attractive and provide what appears to be a healthy glow. Be sure to follow a few simple guidelines to ensure that the glow is, indeed, healthy – and not damaged skin crying for help.

12 Awesome Tan Tips for a Safe Tanning Experience

Can I go the same day to a tanning salon and under the sun?

This should be avoided in order not to exceed the daily dose of UV rays and not get a sunburn.

Why doesn’t my skin tans uniformly everywhere?

The internal surface of the arms and legs does not tan as easily because it contains less pigment cells than the rest of the skin. The face does not tan as well either because it has a thicker cornea layer to protect it from UV rays.
Freckles and moles contain more tanning pigments and therefore get darker faster than the rest of the body. Parts of skin that are compressed are less hydrated. The lack of oxygen can lead to a reduction in the intensity of the melanin pigments.

Can we take a shower immediately after a tanning session?

The rumor which claims that taking shower after a tanning session removes the tan is false. A tan is a synthesis that takes place in the skin and not on the skin. Take care of your skin by taking a shower and by applying a moisturizer, your tan will get really highlighted.

How long does the tanning last?

Approximately 2 to 4 weeks after the last tanning session. After the natural renewal of the skin, the cells are gradually pushed higher. After about 28 days, the skin is renewed. The tanning of the skin can last longer if you apply a specific tanning lotion.

How can we extend the tanning we got from an holiday at the beach?

You can attend a tanning salon once or twice a week. A few minutes of exposure is enough to completely keep your beach tanned skin.

Can or should we prepare a normal skin before exposing it to the sun?

Even if a prior exposure to artificial UV does not protect you properly from the sun, doing so stimulate your melanin system and will help you tan faster on your holiday, and you will look better on the beach!
But be careful you must always wear adequate protection during your exposures to the sun.

Can you tan in the shade?

It is entirely possible. A tan is not only due to direct exposure to sunlight, but can also be due to secondary radiations bouncing into the environment.
The sand and snow, for example, strongly reflect the sun’s rays. You can therefore tan under an umbrella on the beach.

Is it the same to tan inside or outside?

Although ultraviolet radiation is similar in both situations, one can never accurately predict the intensity of a tan taken outside because of changing factors: time of day, season, altitude, cloudiness , pollution, wind, depreciation of the ozone layer, proximity of the equator, and so on. In a tanning salon, the results are controlled, therefore predictable.
Thanks to a more sophisticated technology allowing a good mix of UVA and UVB, sunbeds simulate the solar radiation while minimizing the risk of erythema and sunstroke commonly known as “sunburn”. The tanning beds made available to our customers are mostly producing UVA. We are reproducing the sun safely. A session of 20 minutes in our tanning beds roughly corresponds to the result obtained tanning under the sun for 3 hours. Natural sun exposure is much more dangerous as UVB and Infra-Red are not filtered.

Is exfoliation of the skin beneficial?

Exfoliation, really useful to clean the skin from early unhealthy pigmentation and malicious irregularities, should not be used in the weeks preceding a long sun exposition, the skin should instead be hydrated and protected.
The epidermis is indeed the only protection to the deep layers of the skin, the thicker it is, the less dermal structures will be affected by sunlight.
The protection of the skin prior to the sun exposure is fundamental to fragile skin and this will also insure that there is no permanent damage to the skin.

What are the rules of sun exposure?

Prevent sunburn and reduce the maximum doses received by the skin to a minimum are the two rules for all of those exposing their skin to sunlight for look, sport or work.
To prevent sunburn, whether you already tanned or not, it is important that the skin gets used to new solar radiation, different from those that originally tanned the skin.
You have to wear clothes, use umbrellas and sunscreens. Be careful of any exposure, you must remove any photo-sensitizers cosmetic products (perfume, deodorant, etc.)..
Under medical treatment, please ask your pharmacist, certain medications are photo-sensitizing and can cause substantial damage under UV light.

Can people with type 1 skin use a tanning bed?

The people of type 1 skin (very sensitive) are very sensitive to the sun and the dermatologists recommend to avoid any kind of tanning.
However, to avoid completely the sunlight would mean not benefiting its most important positive effects (for example photosynthesis of vitamin D3).

Would a sunscreen prevent me from tanning?

Not at all! Although skin color change less quickly when you wear a sunscreen, the final result will most likely look even better and be more durable, sunscreen will prevent your skin to burn. Additionally, a gradual tan is less dangerous, more consistent and durable.

Tan Tips for Self Tanners and Indoor Tanning Beds

It can never hurt to have some helpful tanning tips, no matter what your preferred method of tanning might be. Remember, safety comes first folks, so don't overlook your health in lieu of a great tan. Use these tips to get that perfect one with self tanners and indoor tanning beds, safely.

Don't forget, we make an awesome app for tanning that can help, too.

Self Tanners

The new self tanners are improved and do not leave you looking like an orange alien, but give you a beautiful bronze color.

Self tanning lotion is a great way to enhance the tan that you are getting on the tanning bed.

Some tips to applying a self tanner:
  • Exfoliate and shower prior to applying the lotion.
  • Moisturize trouble spots (knees, elbows, feet, and hands) before applying.
  • Use gloves or wash hands every five minutes to keep the lotion from staining your hands during application.
  • Apply in a small circular motion. Some people recommend using a small triangular sponge or a sponge paint brush to help blend the areas at the ankles and hands.
  • Use as little as possible around your feet. Spread the tanner from your legs to your ankles and the tops of your feet.
  • Apply lightly on your face and neck. Don’t forget behind your ears and the back of your neck.
  • Take an old hand towel and towel off to smooth out any leftover residue.
  • After you are done, apply a regular body lotion to the tops of your feet, blend into the ankle, sides of feet, and toes. Apply a small amount to your knees and elbows. Use a larger amount on your hands and blend into the wrists. Rub your belly button with a cotton swab with a bit of lotion.
  • Take a damp wash cloth and wipe your underarms; most people do not have tanned underarms.

Indoor Tanning Beds

Tanning beds are a great way to keep a glow all year long with a controlled dose of UVB and UVA light with predictable results in complete privacy. Tanning beds do have risks as well as benefits. You can get a sunburn. Many people believe that if they do not experience a slight red or pink after they tan, that they did not “get anything.” The truth is that the red or pink is actually a sunburn: your skin’s own worst enemy. Tanning beds should never be used with the same techniques or products as outdoor tanning.

Always wear eye protection. Simply closing your eyes or wearing outdoor sunglasses while you tan is not adequate protection against long term eye injury.

The best tan occurs on clean, moisturized skin. To get the most color, use a moisturizing, color enhanced indoor tanning lotion. Apply the lotion to the entire body including the back of your arms and legs, under your chin, and up the sides of your torso.

Protect your lips. They burn easily, so use a lip balm with sunscreen.

Cover previously unexposed areas for the majority of your tanning session for the first few sessions. Gradually increase exposure to these areas to avoid burns.

Do not lay still. Move around some to make sure your tan covers every curve. Lie with your arms raised above your head and your knees slightly bent.

Keep your skin moisturized. Your skin can become very dry from the heat and light, so moisturize before and after each session.
You need to tan on a constant basis to build a base tan. It generally takes 6-8 sessions.

Seven Steps the Flawless Fake Tan

You think self-tanner will make you look orange, so you go real tanning instead. You hate self-tanner because it doesn't give you the same "glow" as a real tan. However, by following the advice in this article, you can have a fake tan and make it look completely real!

1.      Exfoliate your whole face and body. Use a daily lotion that has AHA (an exfoliating ingredient) and use it daily for one or two weeks in advance for soft, and exfoliated skin.
2.      Next you should apply moisturizer to the driest parts of your skin, as these tend to absorb tanner better than other parts. Get your elbows, knees, ankles, toes, and knuckles.
3.      Apply your self-tanner. Choose one that goes with your skin color: light for fair skin, light/medium for skin that burns then turns tan, medium for normal tan skin, and deep dark for those with a naturally dark complexion. Put on a pair of gloves and start rubbing a small amount evenly over face and body. If you feel like gloves give you less-than-even application, use your bare hands. Lotion them regularly first, apply tan, then wash and exfoliate THOROUGHLY.
4.      Let your skin fully dry before putting on clothes, getting in bed, or going in the pool/shower.
5.      If you end up with missed spots, spray that spot with a spray-on tanner.
6.      If it is too dark in one area use a lightening product such as lemon, toothpaste, strawberries, etc. or buy a tanning corrector/remover.
7.      Go to the beach and flaunt that tan that won't give you skin cancer like all the other sun-bathing babes out there in the harmful rays. People will wonder how in the world you do it!

Six Simple Suggestions on Getting the Perfect Sun Tan

When you want the perfect tan, it’s imperative that you don’t overdo it or under do it. That being said, there are some methods that you can incorporate into your daily routine that can empower you to get that perfect sun kissed tan each and every time. While you do have artificial options of tanning – like spray on tans or tanning salons – we are talking about naturally tanning using good old ultra violet light that’s emitted by the sun. Use these six tips to make your bronze a perfect, lasting one every time.

1. Monitor the UV index: You need to be sure that you monitor the daily UV index. You want to avoid tanning during the sun’s peak to avoid getting burned or increasing your risk of skin cancer. Generally, that means you should not tan between 12-2pm every day.

2. Use a bronzer: A bronzer can help you more easily tone your skin. It will also help you to more evenly tan. Just make sure you don’t overdo it with your bronzer, lest you end up a lot more tan than you had desired.

3. Moisturize often: Your skin is made up of mostly water, about 80% actually. So when you are purposely exposing your skin to the sun, you will lose a lot of water. Make sure that you moisturize often. A good method is about every 15 minutes or so for the best results.

4. Monitor your moles and skin tags: You need to be proactive when tanning. Since tanning can increase your risk of skin cancer, you need to make sure that you are monitoring your moles and skin tags. Have your doctor fully examine your skin every six months.

5. Tan nude when possible for even tone: While you may need to do this in the privacy of your back yard, if you want an even body tone, you need to tan nude. Make sure you add extra sunscreen to those sensitive areas down there.

6. Don’t drink when tanning: Drinking alcohol will dehydrate you and make your skin a lot more prone to burns. It will also increase chances of blemishes and contracting heat related illnesses like heat stroke.

How to Get That Perfect Fake Summer Tan Effortlessly

There is no doubt having a tan makes you feel thinner, sexier and healthier. However, these days baking in the sun is becoming increasingly unpopular as more women realize the sun's UV rays age skin faster than anything (not to mention increase your chance of developing the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma).

If you're ready to skip laying out but don't want to give up glowing skin, self-tanners are a great bet. Self-tanners can darken skin for up to a week thanks to dihydroxyacetone, or DHA.

Here we run down five tips for self-tanning your face and body:

Tip #1: Salon tans are your best bet
If you want a flawless, professional application and can afford the price, head to a spa or salon. For upward of $60, you can get one of many options: Full body exfoliation and professional application of self-tanner, airbrush bronzing (where an aesthetician sprays a fine mist of tanner over your entire body), or your least expensive option: spray tanning. You can step into a booth and get sprayed on all sides for about $20 a session or more.

Tip #2: How to use self-tanner on your face
This is a four-step process. Pull hair up in a ponytail before you start so you don't miss any parts. According to InStyle's May 2007 issue, makeup artist Scott Barnes once missed a spot on Jennifer Lopez's ear because he forgot to pull her hair up.

First, prep skin by gently cleansing and exfoliating. Skip moisturizer, which may interfere with the tanner. See "How to Exfoliate" for more information.

Step two: Apply under-eye cream. According to Barnes in InStyle, you want the color of your skin to be lighter under the eyes, it makes you look younger.

Step three: Blend a few drops of self-tanner and equal parts moisturizer in the palm of your hand then apply over face and neck. You only want to go one shade darker than your natural color.

Step four: Let color develop for three hours then follow up with a sweep of bronzer on forehead, cheeks and nose: areas where the sun naturally shines.
Don't forget: Smooth remaining tanner over earlobes and upper ears. Wash hands thoroughly. Don't skip the sunscreen.

Tip #3: How to self-tan your body
For this three-step process, start by exfoliating skin with a body scrub in the shower paying special attention to rough areas including knees and elbows (dry skin absorbs higher concentrations of tanner). Shave before you tan. InStyle suggests using a body oil, instead of shaving cream, when shaving.

Barnes suggests rubbing Vaseline on cuticles and nails. This protects your manicure and keeps fingertips and nails from staining.

Apply tanner limb by limb, starting with your legs. Apply over the shin and calf of a leg, sweeping tanner down over your ankle, foot and toes. Then apply tanner to your thigh from front to back, using the excess to cover your knee. Repeat on your other leg. For the final step, apply tanner to your hips, stomach and torso, following with your shoulders and arms. Wait 10 minutes to dry before dressing and avoid any excessive activity that will make you sweat for at least a few hours. If your tan hasn't set, sweat could cause streaking.

Bonus tips: To remove tanner from palms, without washing off product from the tops of your hands, rub palms along a wet washcloth, making sure to get in between fingers.
Give arms, legs and décolletage a subtle glow with a body shimmer.

To create fake fab abs, create a contour with the tanner. InStyle suggests flexing your stomach muscles in front of mirror, leaning to the side to see where your "ab line" is, then tracing the outside of your muscle with a bit of tanner on your finger. Do the same to the other side. Once it dries, do an all-over coat.

Tip #4: Pick the right tanner
There are several types of tanners: Tanners created just for the face, airbrush tanners, cream tans, bronzing gel, tinted tans and tan enhancers. There's body shimmer and bronzing powder. You can layer tanners as colors fade. How? Apply a lotion then follow with bronzing powder or shimmer. Just be careful not to go too dark.

Tip #5: So you messed up, uh-oh!
If you end up with a streaky tan, you can fix with an astringent toner or even toothpaste. Exfoliate to even out a patchy application. Not dark enough? Repeat the procedure. Just make sure you gave the tan enough time to develop.
